Examples of Major Suit Keycard Bidding

Roy Wilson

Hand 1
                   A J T 7 2                                           K Q 4
                   Q 9 3 2                                           A K
                    A 10 9 5                                           K Q 7 6 3
                                                      T 7 6

                West                 East
              1               2
              3               3
              4               4NT
              6               7

West's jump to 6 shows a void in clubs and two or more keycards.
East knows the keycards must be the A and the A which is 8 HCP,
and West must have at least 3 more points outside of clubs.

Hand 2
                   A K 5 3 2                                           Q J 4
                   K J 8 2                                           A 6
                    Q 9                                           K J 3 2
                   Q 8                                    A K 7 5

                West                 East
              1               2
              2               2
              4               4NT
              5               6

The 5 response tells East that his partner has two keycards,
but not the queen of trump.  With a missing keycard, East settles at the small slam.

Hand 3
                   9 7 4
                   A K J 9 3 2                                           Q T 8 3
                    K Q                                           A 9 8 5
                   K 2                                    A T 6 3 2

                West                 East
              1               ??
              4NT               6
              7

East's first response could be one of several, depending on the partnership's methods.
Some players would simply show a limit raise by jumping to 3 while an aggressive
partner would splinter in spades.  And still another might use Bergen and jump to
3 or 3 depending on which one shows a limit raise.

Any of these bids could induce opener to check for aces.
East's 6 response shows a void in spades and two or more keycards.
West bids seven with confidence!

Hand 4
                   K J T 9 5                                           A Q 8
                   K Q                                           A J T 6 4
                    K Q J 6 5                                           A 7
                   5 2                                    Q T 6

                West                 East
              1               2
              3               3
              4               4NT
              5               5

The 5 response tells East that his partner has only one keycard, so it's time to stop.
Of course, it's going to make seven without a club lead, but you might not want to take that chance.

Hand 5
                   A 8 6                                           7 5 4
                   K J T 9 6 4                                           A 5
                    K Q 4                                           J T 9 6
                   8                                    A K Q J

                West                 East
              1               2
              2               4NT
              5               5

Bidding 5 shows two keycards, but missing the queen of trump.
You will most likely have to lose to the A and perhaps the Q.
Nobody would fault East for quitting after deciding it's not enough for a slam.

Hand 6

                   K J                                           Q 5 4
                   A Q 8 5 4                                           J T 9 7
                    A J 10 3                                           K Q 7 6
                   Q 9                                    A K

                West                 East
              1               2NT
              3               4NT
              5               5

In the auction above, East initiates the Major Suit Keycard sequence, but either side
might decide to make a slam try.

East Asks -
Note that the 5 bid, which shows two keycards with the queen of trump, allows the
partnership to stop immediately because they knowing they are off two keycards.
West would have to bid 5 playing Roman Keycard and commit the partnership to slam.

West Asks -
The auction would go like this if West decides to ask for aces:

                West                 East
              1               2NT
              4NT               5

In this auction East bids 5 telling his partner that he has zero or one keycard.  East will stop.
